Marketing Masters degrees are offered in three flavours: MAs, MScs and MBAs. The distinction between MA and MSc appears
to have more to do with the policy at the awarding institution rather than the content. For instance, one of the top
courses which runs at Kingston University is awarded as an MA but is one of the most statistically rigorous courses
on offer.
The marketing MBA, as its name suggests, covers not only marketing but the general management options found
on the general MBA courses. This usually means that the course in broader but covers marketing aspects in less depth.
This is one of the main things to consider when deciding on a "pure" marketing masters or a more generalist "marketing
focused" MBA. The other factor to consider is whether you intend to take an MBA, and what sort of MBA you want to take.
Currently none of the "top" MBA schools run a marketing focused MBA, if you want a strong post grad marketing qualification
and and MBA you'll currently have to take two masters degrees.
Is it worth taking an MBA and a masters in marketing? This is quite a tough question and depends on what you want to get
out of the experience. There's no doubt that a good MBA will look better on paper when you're looking for your next job.
MBAs are more high profile and there's more chance that a recruiter will have heard of it and understand what you're
likely to have got from the course. If you're looking for a top level marketing specific which will deepen your marketing
skills, then a marketing masters makes a good option.
Marketing masters are also cheaper than MBAs, marketing masters are currently priced at between £1,500 and £9,000 while
a decent MBA in the UK starts at £10,000.
